New BNF for children app

A SMARTPHONE app offering prescribing information for treating children has been launched by NICE.

The NICE British National Formulary for Children (NICE BNFC) app is available free to health and social care professionals working for NHS England.

Those interested in downloading the app, which can be used on smartphones and tablet PCs, can find it in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Users will have to enter their NHS Athens username and password to activate it. Those without an Athens password can register free online or directly from their smartphone/tablet by following the instructions in the app stores.

Once downloaded, the app can be accessed offline and doesn’t require a network connection.

Commenting on the app, Dr Hilary Cass, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: "Children are not mini adults so prescribing them the correct medication at the right dose and at the right time is crucial when delivering the best possible care.

"This new and informative app will allow clinicians to do this anywhere, at anytime, safely, accurately and quickly."

The NICE BNFC app follows the successful NICE BNF app that was launched in June and has been downloaded nearly 60,000 times. The NICE Guidance app launched in March 2012 has had more than 60,000 downloads.
